Week 11 Term 1 2018


This week, we have all been very excited about our investigations as they have been about the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The children used pipe cleaners to make their athletes. They chose the sport they wanted to represent and then came up with a creative way to make their pipe cleaner athlete perform the sport. We used modelling clay to help the “athletes” stand.

The children made gymnasts, weightlifters, soccer players, rugby sevens players, amateur boxers, swimmers, a netball player, cyclists, a javelin thrower, and an athlete performing the long jump. We are super proud of the time and care the children took when making their athletes.

The children also made their own gold, silver and bronze medals and wore them with pride.

Our writing was inspired by the Commonwealth Games too, and the children wrote the sport they would be a champion in.

    WOW I can see we have some future Commonwealth games athletes at Tawa School. Amazing authors as well.

Week 10 - Term 2 2018 Wearable Arts and Creativity Expo We have had a busy few weeks preparing for our  Wearable Arts and Creativity Expo. The children worked well together in their investigation groups, where they planned and designed  costumes for their mannequins and  explored and created ways to use recycled materials. The children showed their creativity in other ways too - from making 2D and 3D shapes  using tooth picks, to creating Hundertwasser artwork inspired by  a book called Wibbly Wobbly Street. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, friends and whānau who attended our wearable arts and creativity expo last Friday. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing you and it was wonderful to see the children share their learning with you. Term 1 2018 Welcome to Room 12 everyone! We have had a wonderful week getting to know each other and  making new friends. The children have been busy writing holiday stories, practising  handwriting, reading from their book boxes, creating learning maps, and learning about swan plants and caterpillars.    In Rainbow Hui today we presented our new class song,  Waddely Archer, complete with actions that integrate left brain right brain.  It would be great if your child could teach you the song and actions. Investigation time has shown us that we have some very talented children in our class, with lots of creative ideas and problem solving skills.   It has been lovely to listen in on the children's learning conversations with each other.  It is already apparent that we have lots of passionate learners. We look forward to an exciting year ahead with lots of learning opportunities and experiences. It was lovely to meet so many of you this week. H

Term 1 2018 - Week 3 Hi everyone, This week, the children have been looking closely under the leaves of our swan plants to check for little eggs.  One morning, they were very excited to find an egg hanging under one of the leaves.   Over the next few days the children will investigate any changes in the egg. One of our students kindly donated some caterpillars from home to put on the plants so they can start munching on the leaves.  The children have been busy making a variety of items during our investigation time this week.  Two of our students were very passionate about making their own musical instruments, so they made a drum set using tin cans and a microphone using cardboard and cellophane.   We had so much fun listening to their music and singing while trying to think of a band name!
