Week 1 - Term 2 2018

Welcome to Term 2 everyone.  

This week we have been learning about Anzac Day and why we celebrate it every year on 25 April.
We have been thinking about what it might have been like to be a soldier or a nurse going to war and how they might have felt leaving their families behind. The students dressed up in soldiers uniforms, wore backpacks and learnt about the tools soldiers used. They also used a variety of materials to replicate a camp and a trench. The students
experienced being a soldier by re creating the trenches and wearing costumes to re enact an Anzac battle which helped them really get a feel for the ANZACS.

Our nurses set up a first aid camp and designed their own red cross emblems. They attended to their patients with care and compassion and were very gentle when using the bandages.

We were very fortunate to have some actual memorabilia brought into class this week and we thank Freya's family very much for giving the students the opportunity for this rich sensory experience.

We also read a story called Anzac Ted and the students wrote letters to Anzac Ted to share their feelings and good wishes.

We are very proud of our students who shared their Anzac learning at our special Anzac assembly this week.

Week 10 - Term 2 2018 Wearable Arts and Creativity Expo We have had a busy few weeks preparing for our  Wearable Arts and Creativity Expo. The children worked well together in their investigation groups, where they planned and designed  costumes for their mannequins and  explored and created ways to use recycled materials. The children showed their creativity in other ways too - from making 2D and 3D shapes  using tooth picks, to creating Hundertwasser artwork inspired by  a book called Wibbly Wobbly Street. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, friends and whānau who attended our wearable arts and creativity expo last Friday. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing you and it was wonderful to see the children share their learning with you. Term 1 2018 - Week 3 Hi everyone, This week, the children have been looking closely under the leaves of our swan plants to check for little eggs.  One morning, they were very excited to find an egg hanging under one of the leaves.   Over the next few days the children will investigate any changes in the egg. One of our students kindly donated some caterpillars from home to put on the plants so they can start munching on the leaves.  The children have been busy making a variety of items during our investigation time this week.  Two of our students were very passionate about making their own musical instruments, so they made a drum set using tin cans and a microphone using cardboard and cellophane.   We had so much fun listening to their music and singing while trying to think of a band name! Term 1 2018 Welcome to Room 12 everyone! We have had a wonderful week getting to know each other and  making new friends. The children have been busy writing holiday stories, practising  handwriting, reading from their book boxes, creating learning maps, and learning about swan plants and caterpillars.    In Rainbow Hui today we presented our new class song,  Waddely Archer, complete with actions that integrate left brain right brain.  It would be great if your child could teach you the song and actions. Investigation time has shown us that we have some very talented children in our class, with lots of creative ideas and problem solving skills.   It has been lovely to listen in on the children's learning conversations with each other.  It is already apparent that we have lots of passionate learners. We look forward to an exciting year ahead with lots of learning opportunities and experiences. It was lovely to meet so many of you this week. H
