Week 6 - Term 2 2018

Our trip to Te Papa

Our trip to Te Papa on Wednesday was full of surprises, excitement and wonder.

We explored different areas within the museum and were very impressed by the great questions from our students.

At the Pasifika area we learnt about the styles and designs made on the tapa cloth from each country. Each Island has it's own name for the tapa cloth. We looked closely at the large Tongan cloth and noticed the three coloured circles found in the pattern represent the coconut. The tivaevae tapa from the Cook Islands was brightly coloured. We also saw different woven baskets, practised our own patterns with stencil rubbings, learnt some of the languages, played the drums and tried our hand at some traditional tattoo markings.
A huge thank you to our parents who came with us on Wednesday and helped make this a very special experience for everyone.
